"Red and yellow and pink and green
 purple and orange and blue
 I can sing a rainbow,
 sing a rainbow,
 sing a rainbow too."

Do you know this song? It's a rainbow song.
I learnt it when I was a child and I love it!

It has been raining and raining and raining in Japan this week,
and I am hoping to be able to sing a rainbow by next week.

Look at these sushi!

This is a picture that I took at the Karato Fish Market last year.
Karato Fish Market is located at Shimonoski City of Yamaguchi Prefecture,
and is famous for its' unique ways of selling sea products.

One of them is the way the sushi are sold.
Usually in fish markets, sushi are made after they are ordered or packed in a package,
but in this market, they are displayed like the picture above,
so that the customers easily can take their choice, like a buffet.

It was so fun going around the market deciding which sushi to eat
(because each store has slightly different kind of sushi from other stores).
I would recommend you to visit this market if you have a chance to go to southern Japan!

A slightly confusing cake...

Maria 542

Can you tell what this is?
A cat?
A bear?
Today, Evil Yamamoto-kun brought us very confusing and strange looking manju (that's just how evil he is).
Turns out it is supposed to be a raccoon! I can see the resemblance...

There are many shapes of these traditional Japanese sweets with sweet red bean paste in the middle, such as round, or shaped according to a seasonal reference. This was however the first time any of us here at Sakura Hotel Jimbocho had seen a RACCOON shaped one!

IMG_1727.JPG IMG_1729.JPG

It's quite freaky how they are all lined up like this... The kind of freakishness that gives one nightmares...
Not to mention the size!!

We compared it to an edamame bean... It's HUGE!!!

The freakiest of all was that it actually tasted really good... Not what one would expect from something Raccoon flavoured!

So if you find some rare and strange shaped manju like this one, please let us know! We always look forward to trying new things... Well almost always.

Until next time.

Cafe au lait brekkie!

Maria 540

Posted by: Maria

Hello all!

Long time no bloging! I hope you are all well.
Today I was a bit late and I had no time to eat breakfast, so I took the liberty of having the breakfast at Sakura Hotel Jimbocho!
Not only is it cheap (315yen) but you can eat as much as you want!

Recently we imported some "cafe au lait bowls" from France! Did you know that people drink cafe au lait out of big bowls in Europe?

The size of the bowls look more like they would be used for soup or noodles or something. But I must say it is rather pleasing drinking coffee out of a big bowl. And you can have as many as you want at brekkie time! If you can handle more than one that is.

(You can see the difference in size compared to the mug filled with soup on the left)

All in all, I had a good breakfast and it got me all ready for work at Sakura Cafe Jimbocho

That's all for now.

Until next time.

Tocca a digitale terrestre!

Takeshi 536

Posted by: Takeshi

Japanese Fans

kuwahara 535

Posted by: kuwahara

In such a hot day, we Japanese use fans.
The common use of a fan is to wave wind on a hot day,
but did you know that there are various types of fans used in different occasions?

For instance, gold or silver fans are mainly used in celebratory events like wedding,
whereas grey fans are used in funerals.

These fans below are used in tea ceremony
- the former one is used in autumn, and the latter is used in summer.
It might be difficult to find the differences between other fans just looking at these pictures,
but they are bit smaller than the normal fans.

Colourful fans are used in traditional Japanese performing arts such as Noh and Kabuki.
They are so beautiful and artistic that some people buy them to display at their houses.

If you have a chance come to Japan, try finding these different fans!

Another X to mark the spot.

Maria 534

Hello all.

I have sad news...well they are about 5 days old, but sad none the less.
Former X Japan bassist Taiji passed away last Sunday (17th).
There was quite alot of drama surrounding his death which I'm sure a lot
of you already have read on Wiki.
Taiji was X Japan's bassist for their first 3 albums and was one of the
original X Japan members.
X Japan was the first Japanese band I ever listened to and is one of the major
reasons why I grew a strong interest in Japan.
I was even lucky enough to see them live twice and will see them again in
August. Of course I would very much have liked to see Taiji on stage with
the rest of the members. Taiji was by far my favourite bassist, so his death
was all in all quite a shock.
He has left a big mark on me and millions of others, and I thank him for his
contribution to the world of music.

Fans all over the world are lamenting his death.
We will be playing X Japan all day today at Sakura Hotel Jimbocho to honour his memory.

Until next time.
